Cyrus Kabiru, a self-taught Kenyan artist, has gained international acclaim for his innovative use of found objects to create mixed-media masks and goggles, known as C-Stunners. Born in Nairobi in 1984, Kabiru’s artistic journey began in the vibrant urban landscape that surrounded him, drawing inspiration from the discarded materials that littered the streets. His father, a craftsman, influenced Kabiru’s approach to repurposing these materials into functional art. The C-Stunners series, which has been exhibited worldwide, is not only a testament to Kabiru’s creativity but also serves as a commentary on consumerism and waste.
These whimsical sculptures challenge viewers to see the world differently, reflecting Kabiru’s belief that “they’re not for seeing better; they’re for seeing different.” His work, which extends beyond eyewear to include bicycles and other sculptural forms, continues to inspire and provoke thought about identity, culture, and environmental sustainability.
