Layers of identity: Ariel Dannielle’s celebratory portraits of black women

Ariel Dannielle captures the essence of everyday experiences through her vibrant and compelling painting style. Her work serves as a dynamic exploration of black womanhood, gently unraveling stories embedded within the ordinary lives of African-American women. These portraits, often characterized by their bold colors and expressive forms, delve into the nuanced perspectives of black women in the United States. Dannielle skillfully transcends the boundaries of conventional depiction, focusing not only on resilience but also on the celebration of joy and empowerment. With each brushstroke, she embraces the complexities of individual identity, highlighting the beauty and strength found in the routine and familiar.

In Dannielle’s paintings, there’s an evocative blend of personal experience and cultural narrative. Her art extends beyond mere representation, creating a lively dialogue about identity and connection. Each piece encourages reflection on the broad spectrum of emotions and experiences that define black womanhood. By capturing moments of genuine laughter, contemplation, and defiance, Dannielle emphasizes the multifaceted nature of her subjects. Through this blend of visual storytelling and cultural exploration, she adds a rich layer to the tapestry of contemporary art, offering a fresh perspective on the universal elements of human experience.

I paint with the hope that my viewers not only feel empowered and inspired, but also seen and understood. (…) I aim to show my experiences in a way of thriving, not just surviving. Though seeing the history of my culture is important, I do not want to be defined by my trauma, our joy should be highlighted too. I believe there is still room for more exploration for Black figures in art when it comes to representation. It is my hope that my depiction of simple everyday experiences provides new understandings of Black womanhood and causes new connections to be made.
