Tuomas Markunpoika’s innovative series, “Amalgamated”, transcends the typical boundaries of artistry by transforming mundane tools into captivating works of art. Through his meticulous approach, Markunpoika elevates everyday colored pencils from their standard role as writing instruments to the main materials of his creation. By methodically connecting facets of hundreds of pencils, the artist crafts each vase with an impressive hexagonal network, emphasizing the individual character of each pencil. His work invites us to reconsider the hidden potential in common objects and explores the intricate relationship between mass production and individual expression. Using a lathe to sculpt the pencil blocks into graceful vases, Markunpoika reveals the enchanting patterns hidden within the materials, urging us to appreciate the unseen allure of items often taken for granted.
The structural complexity and beauty of Markunpoika’s vases serve as a poignant demonstration of the artistic possibilities contained within everyday items. By employing a raw material as familiar as colored pencils, the artist delves deep into the aesthetic dimensions and tactile qualities that typically lie beneath the surface. Each vase is a narrative of transformation, where uniformity gives way to individuality, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Through this series, Markunpoika bridges the gap between functional design and artistic exploration, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay of form, purpose, and craftsmanship. The creation process itself, reminiscent of an ancient artisan’s touch combined with modern techniques, highlights Markunpoika’s ability to not only see beyond the obvious but also to inspire creativity by encouraging a reevaluation of the materials we often overlook.
Amalgamated’ is a collection which explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose. The beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. ‘Amalgamated’ is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves. The vases are created by individually gluing one facet of a pencil to another, taking benefit of their hexagonal shape forming a network of pencils. The block of pencils is machined with a lathe and turned into the final shape. The flow of each shape unveils a different pattern of the inner structure revealing the beauty of the pencil.
