Mariko Kusumoto’s textile sculptures are a fascinating blend of art and nature, capturing the delicate beauty of marine life and everyday objects through her unique use of translucent fabrics. Her work is characterized by a sense of play and wonder, often inspired by the ocean and its inhabitants, which she translates into ethereal, billowing forms that seem to float in their own serene world.
Kusumoto’s transition from metalwork to textiles has allowed her to explore the “endless, unlimited possibilities” of fabric, creating pieces that are not only visually captivating but also invite viewers to reconsider the boundaries between different artistic mediums and the natural world. My work reflects various, observable phenomena that stimulate my mind and senses; they can be natural or man-made. I ‘reorganize’ them into a new presentation that can be described as surreal, amusing, graceful, or unexpected. A playful, happy atmosphere pervades my work. I always like to leave some space for the viewer’s imagination; I hope the viewer experiences discovery, surprise, and wonder through my work.
